This review is from: Pioneer AVIC-S2 Portable Smart GPS Navigation with 3.5\" Touch DisplayI have been testing few Navigation Systems in the last few weeks, Pioneer Avics2 Portable Gps Navigation System, has really impressed me with its performance. This Slim (1.7cm. or 0.7 inches), light Weight (180 Grams or 6.35 ounces) Navigation System is very easy to use whether in the car or out side the car; if like to go hiking, biking or exploring the down town of any city that you are not familiar with. The Mp3 and the loud speakers give you added enjoyment while hiking or biking, but watch out for the battery. The maps and other information about the Points of Interest (POI) are very accurate and load almost immediately, and the route updating is almost instantaneously. The TeleAtlas map database covers the continental United States with Alaska and Hawaii in addition to Canada. The 3D Map View gives a detailed view of your location and the route ahead, and you can easily zoom in or out. Full Color TFT 3.5-inch touch screen interface, provides simple operation, in addition, maps and menus are easy-to-read on the large, anti-glare screen.Pioneer Avics2 Portable Gps Navigation System features also a Night Display option, with Brightness Control of 8 Levels, and a built in Microphone. This compact GPS unit also features Bluetooth technology for hands-free cell phone operation while driving, which is a great blessing for safety. The only con in my opinion is the battery life, which is about 4 hours. If you are planning to go hiking or biking for more than 4 hours, you better keep that in mind, but in the car there is no problem, as you can use a car charger which comes with the Pioneer Avics2 Portable Gps Navigation System....

This review is from: Pioneer AVIC-S2 Portable Smart GPS Navigation with 3.5\" Touch DisplayI have had this for about a week now and the pros outweigh the few cons. First off, the maps are very accurate and load fast, the 3d view and tracking is perfect and the route updating is almost instananeous. The bluetooth works about as good as bluetooth does and I havn't bothered with the MP3 player. All in all its been a good unit and I would highly reccomend it....

This review is from: Pioneer AVIC-S2 Portable Smart GPS Navigation with 3.5\" Touch DisplayAlthough this is the only GPS I've ever bought, I am quite pleased. The touch screen interface makes searching destinations quick and easy. I've had this GPS for about a year now, and it still works perfectly fine. If you're looking for a cheap but effective first time GPS, I would recommend getting this one....

Samsung PN43D490 43-Inch 720p 600Hz 3D Plasma HDTV (Black)

43-inch plasma display panel with 720p HD resolution (1366 x 768 pixels)

3D-ready HDTV: add Samsung active 3D glasses and 3D content device

Five separate HD inputs (two HDMI, two HD component, one PC)

USB port for enjoying videos, music, or pictures from your USB devices

600Hz subfield motion and ultra-fast response time for clarity during fastest-moving scenes

This review is from: Samsung PN43D490 43-Inch 720p 600Hz 3D Plasma HDTV (Black)The Samsung C750 is the most reasonable 3DTV on the market in terms of price. Not only is the television fully 3D compliant with the new standards, it also is an excellent 2D LCD television as well. The 3D aspects of the television are the most interesting and what separates it from most other LCD's (including Samsung's 650 model). Although there is not much in terms of content to try out, I have watched Monsters Vs. Aliens 3D, Played Avatar the videogame on the PS3, watched the Masters in 3D, and tried out the 2D to 3D Conversion on live TV, movies, and games. Unfortunately with all 3D sources, I have experienced some "ghosting" which is a problem where you see a double image. That said, I did manage to configure my Samsung 3D Bluray Player to the correct TV size (by default it's 55 inches) plus I upgraded the firmware and that seems to have made a large improvement. I suspect the picture size spreads out the effect and will cause even more ghosting than normal. With Avatar the game, I left the 3D effect at 1, set the correct TV size and viewing distance, and chose side by side 3D (you have to set the TV to match this) and the effect was brilliant! I do still see ghosting during cut scenes, but during gameplay it looks fantastic. The Masters, was a bit of a mixed bag. It is also side by side 3D and at times it is brilliant (when the camera pans around the environment your jaw will drop) but the first time you see severe ghosting you are taken out of the moment. However, I think once Cable and Satellite receivers are more 3D ready, you should be able to configure for the screen size, depth, and viewing distance.2D to 3D is unique and has its moments of brilliance but also has severe drawbacks. Let's put it this way, you won't confuse Monsters Vs. Aliens 3D in it's native 3D format for watching Monsters Vs. Aliens in 2D to 3D conversion. The conversion (you can change the depth) actually can be quite blurry with some material and most material isn't worth watching converted. Some movies like Star Trek are kind of fun but I wouldn't buy the television strictly for this feature.2D content is fantastic. The color (even the black level since you can configure the backlight without having to hack the firmware), sharpness, and overall features (such as MotionPlus) are astounding for the price range. I actually have turned off MotionPlus simply because it gives non sports programming a "Spanish Soap Opera" effect. I did run into a bit of a strange issue that seems to have gone away by resetting the cable box where the picture bounced up and down using a Time Warner HD Cable box hooked via HDMI (you need HDMI to view the Masters in 3D). I really can't hold that against the TV, it was more the cable box but I've read of similar problems with some Samsung models so there does seem to be some buggy firmware with the box. Overall if it wasn't for the ghosting issues still being present (it could be the content, but I cannot be sure, I'd like to test more 3D Televisions) and the 2D to 3D conversion being slightly underwhelming I'd give this TV a perfect score. As it is, if you are in the market for an affordable HDTV and want the 3D option, you can't go wrong. You have plenty of inputs (plus two usb slots) and the TV is a beautiful compliment to your entertainment room so I highly recommend this television (it's nearly $1,000 cheaper than the LED model of the same size).Edit as of 5/12/2010:I've had this TV now for a few weeks and gone through a firmware update, tested some more functions, calibrated it more, and updated the firmware on the Samsung 6900 3D Bluray Player twice.I want to change my comments on 2D - 3D conversion. I don't know if it's the firmware upgrade or what, but now I definitely see a difference in most scenes (I have the depth up to 10). Games like Uncharted 2 with a map like "The Village" look fantastic converted. I've also managed to get Avatar (The Game) on the PS3 to look great with side by side 3D with minimal ghosting. Since the firmware update and the 3D Optimize option for the TV, Monsters Vs. Aliens 3D also looks very good.I did have a stupid moment where I noticed a huge lag playing something like Rock Band and finally realized there is a game mode. Since going to game mode, I have no issues playing videogames and the response time is virtually nothing now.I absolutely love the TV, it does have some flashlighting (You don't see this unless the screen is ENTIRELY black) but 2D content looks fantastic and 3...

Logitech Quickcam - 1080p, hd webcam

Review update-- 9/11/10

During my original review, I rated the camera with regards to Skype use. I'm elated to learn from a Logitech forum post that this camera will be supporting Skype HQ with release of Skype 5.0! Because of this great news, I have revamped my review to better reflect the camera's use with 5.0, which I have been testing in beta.

The positives:

Camera & software install is easy

Camera Size is small

Design is attractive

Logitech HD video chat software is a nice option for those who aren't big into Skype or other big name branded chat programs.

It does great in low light situations and with dual mics seems overall very capable of capturing small sounds

Even in HD, this cam doesn't seem to drag on my system resources and make the PC slow like the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema

Negatives:

Not yet Skype HQ compliant, but will be soon with the release of Skype 5.0!

The USB cable is about 1 foot shorter than the cable on the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 / QuickCam Pro 9000

The clip doesn't fit on my monitor as well as the Logitech Webcam Pro 9000 / QuickCam Pro 9000 or the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema

Now that this cam is slated to be Skype HQ compliant, I can say this is my preferred & recommended camera. Once I get the full release of 5.0 (non-beta) I'll update the review with my thoughts. Logitech 1080p Webcam Pro C910

I have been using the previous model Quickcam Pro 9000 for around a year, and I decided to pass that on to someone and buy this new model for myself.

The quality of the picture, sound, and the Logitech software is simply excellent (I use Windows 7). The Camera definition/detail is simply stunning, even in low light. I love the performance.

So, why only 4 stars you may think?

Well, when i first saw the C910, I liked the fact that is was considerably more compact than the Pro 9000. I travel quite a lot, and liked the idea of slightly smaller cam. I was disappointed there is no carrying case to protect the cam when in my computer bag with my ac adaptor, phone-charger and other accessories.

However, one drawback I have discovered is that the smaller size and slightly differences in shape of the "foot" means that the C910 is a little "wobbly" when perched on top of the screen of my laptop, whereas the Pro-9000 was absolutely solid. The "grip" system of the C910 is based on the same principle as that of the Pro9000, ie it is a friction grip, and not a "spring clip" or an actual clamp. I think if the foot was about a cm longer (still smaller than the Pro 9000) it might be more stable, or possibly the Pro9000 is more stable simply because it is heavier. This is not a problem on my desktop monitor, or if my laptop is on the desk, rather then actually on my lap. On my lap, or on a train, the cam can wobble a bit with any movement of the laptop.

To summarise:

PRO:

-superb cam performance, both sound and picture

- simple and robust software installation, no conflicts or problems found with Windows 7.

- reasonably compact size

CON:

- does not sit stable on laptop display

- no carrying case to protect it in my computer bag.

However, I still highly recommend Logitech, and this model in particular. I like it.

POSTSCRIPT: I have improved the stability of the cam on my laptop, I have taken a blob of blu-tak about 1/2 the size of a golf-ball and added it just above the hinge simply to increase the weight of the cam. It is now perfectly stable while i use the laptop and cam on my lap. I did not want to use the blutack to "stick" the cam to the laptop. I will figure out a more aesthetically pleasing solution for the long-term now I know a slight increase in weight will do what I want.

UPDATE 9/2010: I replaced the blu-tak with a couple of balance weights (self adhesive) from a ceiling fan kit, and wheel-balancing kit - simply because they were what I had to hand. I have uploaded photos to the product page.

I put 2x5gm weights just above the hinge-joint. Then later added a single 5gm weight at the very end of the arm. If I was doing it again from scratch, i would install a 5gm weight at the end of the arm - and check if it was enough. Then perhaps add a 5gm weight just above the hinge joint. My feeling is that the lower of the two weights contributes the most. I bought a strip of wheel balance weights off ebay-UK for about £3.00 ($4.50), so the modification is not too onerous or expensive.

Hello I purchased the camera to use with Skype mainly. Yes on a Mac there is no Logitech software whatsoever so its plug and play.

I'm thrilled. In little more than the monitor's lighting the image was good, with more lighting it was as good as it is on a still with a 7.1mp camera. I swooshed about and the image didn't blur sickeningly. The Follow your Head feature, well you don't get that or any other manually selectable attribute because of the no-software punishment we mac-ies are still enduring in this day and age. If Logitech doesn't care to give us software I'm perfectly happy with some other creator doing so.

Mic functions even when you are not using the imaging element under USB Unknown Audio Input and in some software it self selected. It isn't good enough for intense talking-to- software like Rosetta Stone which is listening for pitch and precise pronunciation. Maybe if you hold it close to your mouth it would work well enough even for that application but you don't want to be holding a camera as you'll smudge and eventually scratch the lens by handling it. If you can find a way to mount closer to your face but keep your hands off it, then you can solve that little problem as well.

I used it as a true video movie maker using Quicktime Pro 7. Just chose NEW MOVIE, let the software configure the BEST settings and clicked RECORD! 19 SECONDS IS 2.6mb and the file I created opens and plays as it should in every mov file player I have.

note: In Quicktime v10 you have to choose the HIGH setting. Camera doesn't function at all in the MAXIMUM setting.

What you can't do with this camera is use it stealthily as a security cam as it emits a lovely BLUE GLOW in the shape of a PARENTHESIS framing the lens. The blue band you see in the ad literature is a LIGHT and I don't think they make that very clear in any documentation. I thought it was just a painted stripe. When it lit up I was surprised! In the dark a thief would see that glow from across any room.

What takes a bit of getting used to (and I'd guess that is with any camera) is that you have to turn left when you mean right and right when you want to move left or to refer to that side of your body or the image and your things behind you.

My Mac Mini is running 10.6.4 - Webcam - Skype - Hd Webcam - 1080p'

This review is from: Kodak Easyshare M1020 10-Inch Digital FrameThe quality of the pictures was terrific. This frame is also very easy to use. I do agree with another reviewer that the user guide leaves much to be desired. I ended up returning my frame because of one issue that is a big deal to me. I absolutely have to have a frame that can show pictures in a random order. This frame claims that when shuffle is on that is what it is suppose to do but it does not work. I tried more then just my frame(even called and emailed kodak) and the pictures are shown the exact same way every time. I have too many pictures to have to sit through all the same ones every time to get to different ones. I believe they could fix this frame with a firmware update and I will keep an eye out because I would like to get this frame if they it....

This review is from: Kodak Easyshare M1020 10-Inch Digital FrameStraight out of the box, this frame gave remarkable results. Inserted an SD card, turned it on, and presto, my photos never looked better. The touch frame is extremely easy to use, and very intuitive! Never looked at the manual, which turns out to be a good thing, since it leaves a lot to be desired. Checked it to see what "Shuffle" on or off did (never did find out) and how to get random picture display, which it apparently doesn't do - thus 4 stars. But for bright, sharp pictures with a wide viewing angle, it beats any thing else I've looked at. Going to purchase an EasyShare M820 for the kitchen, and two more EasyShare M1020's for my daughter and sister-in law!Added note: From Kodak web site - "Shuffle" plays pictures in random order!!! Changing rating to 5 stars...

This review is from: Kodak Easyshare M1020 10-Inch Digital FrameI really like having my pictures displayed on a digital picture frame. It is a convenient, space saving way to review thousands of pictures. Great entertainment in a small space. I brought one in to my elderly aunt to watch in her nursing home. She really enjoys watching the family photos, with hundreds of pictures cycling throughout the day. Sure beats TV! This is a great application for these picture frames. But anyways, I now own 4 different model/different manufacturer Digital picture frames. This Kodak 10" model is my most recent purchase and the best picture frame that I own to date. What is wrong with the other picture frames? Some picture frames, the real cheap ones, seem to suffer from low CPU power. It can cause a long 'blank screen delay between flipping to the next picture. This Kodak is quick, it will flip to the next picture as fast as you want. The picture is large, brilliant, colorful and relatively high res. The specs say 800 x 480 but it really looks much higher than that. It scales pictures to fit the frame nicely. And the viewing angle is terrific, pictures are brilliant and visible even when viewing the frame from way off to the side. The touch screen is great since it is on the front is very accessible unlike other frames that hide controls in the back. And I like that the touch controls are subtle, not noticeable, which would detract from the overall look of the picture frame. One reviewer didn't like the frame's built in menus, but they are not difficult by any stretch. And really, how often do you use them? For me, not often. I set it the way I want with the desired transition & display mode. Then it's just set it and forget it. I use Compact Flash for the pictures. Holds a ton of pictures on one inexpensive chip. I keep a few CF chips around loaded up with different pictures. Get this Kodak picture frame. You won't regret it!...
