Battery Packs - lithium-ion, makita

I have owned a set of Makita tools with the LXT batteries for a couple years now and I have noticed absolutely zero power loss or any other problems. I use them quite regularly whether building concrete forms, decks, remodels, etc. I can think of three things that may be happening to the batteries of those who have commented on bad performance or longevity; (1) Occasionally, batteries can be bad from the factory (I have yet to own a milwaukee tool with the new "V" or "M" series battery that holds up past a few months. I have both V28 and M12, and have had ALL packs replaced) (2) It is possible to have a bad charger which is damaging the batteries itself, or (3) Perhaps the users are taking them all the way to the point of stalling and complete discharge, and for that the batteries are truly not made to do. It is best that once you notice the battery pack is wearing down, to grab a fresh one and put the discharged on the charger to cool down and refresh. Also, if the batteries are being stored for most of their life, it is best to keep the charger plugged in and rotate batteries through it to keep everything active and refreshed. Lithium batteries have computer chips and sophisticated circuitry, allowing them to constantly be charged without damage. Ni-Cad on the other hand are not supposed to be charged over and over again because they typically have memory effects and lifetime charging limits. It is best to mostly, not completely, discharge a Ni-Cad before replacing back onto the charger. Because a consumer only has ultimate control of this last variable, it is a good idea to read the owners manual and find out what the manufacturer thinks is best operating practices. Only those who are using the batteries and tools know how they are being treated, and you may very well be doing everything right and not fall into this third category. Being that my kit is from a couple years ago, and my newest battery packs (purchased just for continued use because I have many LXT tools) were purchased last year sometime, it is possible that the newer batteries are of a lesser quality, and that would be unfortunate. What I can say is this; I own many Dewalt tools, which I have only had to replace a couple Ni-Cad battery packs in the past 5 years. (Dewalt tools are mostly made in Mexico) I have owned MANY Milwaukee tools in which their Ni-Cads held up pretty well, but their Li-Ion line is absolute crap. Several years ago when their tools were still made in the US, their quality was impeccable. Their tools are now made completely in China. (Yes, many of the Makitas are also) I own several Bosch as well, and their batteries and tools are right up there with Makita's quality. As far as Skil, Black and Decker, and any other cheaper or knock-off brand goes, I would personally never purchase them. For one, you are supporting China, and secondly you would be purchasing a tool that is undependable. Hitachi has an excellent warranty, and makes excellent air nailers, however I'm unsure of the quality you may find in their power tools, both corded and cordless. I hope this was helpful. Makita BL1815 18-Volt 1.5 Ah Compact Lithium-Ion Battery

I love the drill but the battery life is a real problem. I had both original packs replaced under warranty when the charger reported them bad. Now one of the replacements is flashing bad on the charger. These have been cycled maybe a dozen times. I'll be complaining to Makita and also reporting this on the various woodworking groups I support.

Really, these batteries provide seemingly endless power. They hold their charge for weeks with very little loss. I can use one battery for drilling and driving throughout an entire (moderately sized) project. They are extremely lightweight and charge in twenty minutes or less usually (in hot weather it takes longer). All three of mine slide on and off easily, with no issues of binding or falling off. With all the praise comes a VERY important caveat. DO NOT run these batteries into the ground. The instructions state that as soon as you notice a loss of power, stop and charge. If you over-discharge Li-Ion batteries, you can seriously degrade the life of the battery. These batteries are 1/3 cheaper on Amazon.com than at the home centers, so buy from here! Also, only the cells themselves are made in Japan, all other parts are made and final assembly is in China.

I replaced a 14.4 Milwaukee NiCad with a Makita LXT and noticed that my old Milwaukee NiCads outlasted these in terms of longevity. Run time is solid, but lifespan is short. Two dead after one year, I'm only a homeowner. I've only done a few lengthy jobs such as putting cement board down in a 10x20 room, and building a deck with these, in addition to the other basic tasks of drywall, and other light construction needs. Love the light weight though. Now, I need new ones. Somewhat disappointing.

I went ahead and invested in a pair of these batteries despite the mixed reviews, figuring I'd at least get a year out of them with the warranty. So far, they've performed just fine, even on tools that are supposed to only use the BL1830. I mostly use them on the BHP454 drill (note: this is one of the tools that's keyed for the 1830 pack) and BTD141 impact driver when I'm not going to be using them for long, so the decreased runtime doesn't bother me. I also use them on the angle grinder and recip saw (after removing the little tab on the tools) for light work in tight spaces. I wouldn't want them to be my only batteries, but they're a great addition to a couple of the larger batteries if you have a few tools that can use them.

These slim packs are very handy on the drill, impact, and flashlight- the lighter weight and smaller size are noticeable, especially with the smaller (BDF/BHP452) drills. However, buyer beware when it comes to using them on the 'heavier' tools, as they are keyed for the larger batteries because they can draw more current than these smaller batteries can provide without damaging the cells. So you probably shouldn't slap one of these on your circular saw and go ripping 2x12s all day, or you'll kill the pack very quickly. Makita isn't trying to screw you into buying more batteries, they're trying to make sure you don't kill your batteries.

Another note, considering how many complaints of defective packs there are: don't run these batteries down to nothing, and try not to store them fully charged. Running them into the ground is a sure way to damage the cells, and I've read estimates of up to 20%/year capacity loss for a fully-charged pack, compared to as low as 2%/year for a pack stored @ 40% charge.

And of course, like any cordless tool/battery purchase- shop your options before buying batteries separately. I got the BHP452HW kit for only $50 more than 2 batteries. That's a cheap, easy way to have a spare drill or driver and charger for around the house, or to sell to recoup the extra cost.

I'm knocking off one star because Makita doesn't do a good job of letting people know that these slim packs only work on certain tools- and not very many, either. That's been a complaint for years now, and it's still not mentioned anywhere in their literature or website- even my local Makita dealer didn't know they weren't compatible with all LXT tools. It's not like it's standard practice- Bosch's and Milwaukee's slim packs fit their entire lineup, AFAIK. - 18 Volt - Makita - Lithium-ion - 18v'

Compactflash Card - 8gb, compactflash cards

I originally bought this card as a cheapo backup for my much more expensive Sandisk Extreme 60MB/s CF card that I use in my 7D. However, I have not noticed a practical difference in speed between the two cards. I can count on both hands the number of times I've had to wait for the buffer to flush with either card and this is while shooting 25MB RAW files in 8FPS bursts. I just bought two more of the 8GB Ultras so I don't have to worry about running out of space when shooting on location. No need to spend extra on speed the 7D doesn't take advantage of. I highly recommend Sandisk in general and these cards in particular. SanDisk 8GB Compact Flash CF Ultra 30MB/s ( SDCFH-008G , Bulk Package )

I bought this card back in April for my Olympus camera and it has been messed up the entire time. I formatted it with my camera and proceed to take 800 photos with it and it instantly becomes unformatted when I plug it into my Macintosh. It's done this repeatedly (I know it's not my computer as I have an older Toshiba CF card that has never had an issue) and I've had to rely on photo recovery programs to try and get the pictures back; not the preferred route to go to say the least.

When it actually feels like working in the camera it functions beautifully, however. I think I just got unlucky with this card.

This review is for the Sandisk Ultra 8GB 30MB/sec card (SDCFH-008G), bulk package.

Superfast with the Canon 40D in picture taking and in downloading through the camera.

The 40D is probably too easy for this card. No complaint.

Works well with my canon 7D even if it's not UDMA. Like the manual says, I can shoot up to 96 jpegs or 15 raw images (up until the camera buffers fulls up). I can also take pictures while filming in full HD.

I have approximately oodles of these cards. I am a professional photographer and use only this card and size. I have purchased the ones in "bilk packaging" as well as those in standard packaging and they are reliable and consistent everytime. I do however label and date all of my cards as I purchase them and then pull them out of rotation after so many shots and re-formats.. (I reformat after every shoot)

I recommend these cards highly to anyone in need of the CF cards at a decent price!

No problems so far, great deal for the price. Use it with my Canon rebel which can't handle the faster cards, and honestly I have no problems with speed. I can take several pictures on continuous shoot before it needs to catch up.

I bought two of these. One of them works fine and the other caused issues with my Canon 5D. I took several pictures without any problems but then it locked my camera up when I tried to review some of the shots. I am also unable to move any of the images to my IMac using a card reader.

Both of the cards came in a plastic holder sealed with an adhesive backed label. This label was difficult to remove and left adhesive residue on the outside of the holder. This residue is probably not something that you want to get into a $3000 camera.

In the future I will stick with the retail packaging. I am not sure what "bulk pack" means but I now question whether the same quality standards are adhered to. Maybe these are refurbished in some way? If you do decide to save some money and buy these, test them thoroughly before using (always good advice but not always followed).

I am new to CF cards and maybe I was just unlucky, but if I were Sandisk I would be cautious about the use of my brand on items like this.

I use this card in my Canon 7D for extra video capture. It captures 1080p @ 30fps without a single problem. It just works perfectly. Make sure to format the card in your camera before you use it and only delete data from on the card while it is in your camera. I highly recommend this card.

Straight out of the package the card started giving me problems. I tried a test shot but had some weird issues when trying to use the card. When I finally was able to take a shot, I tried to read the card but windows froze until I removed the card from my card reader. After a couple of similar attempts I was able to format the card again. After this issues, my camera (Canon 7D) started giving me problems too. it wouldn't find the card, photos were lost and I had to fomat the card AGAIN. Card is obviously corrupt since now I can't do anything with it =/ Can't format it with windows or my camera. Couldn't even take 10 shots with it.

This is is the 8th or 9th Sandisk card I've bought in the past years and the first one to give me problems. I really wish SanDisk tested out their cards before shipping them out cause I bought this card for a special moment and had to use my supposedly, now a backup, old sandisk card =/ - 8gb - Compact Flash - Blueproton - Compactflash Cards'

This review is from: HP df1010b3 10.4-Inch Digital Picture FrameI purchased one of these for my mother's birthday. Being as she is not very tech savy, I had to setup the frame for her. I find this frame to be great, setup was fast and easy, drag and drop pictures from my computer onto the frame (I could fit a lot of pictures due to the large internal memory). The resolution of the frame is great pictures show up clearly. And the wood housing matches great with the wood cabinet it sits on. Overall very satisfied with this picture frame and would recommend to anyone looking to purchase a digital frame....

This review is from: HP df1010b3 10.4-Inch Digital Picture FrameI bought two of these frames for Christmas gifts for my 75 year old mother in law and my brother, who are both technically challenged. Pros:-The size of the pictures and the quality are wonderful. -Pictures are luscious and vibrant. -The color is bright, the auto-resizing works well. -Price for this 10.4" is equal to the 8" Sony (also a top-end frame)-mp3 player!-2G of internal memory for the same price as the HP 1010A3 (512k)Cons-The "random" option does not work. at all. -Pictures are a challenge to load. I have also now spent 3 hours and 2 calls to HP Customer Service trying to copy photos onto this picture frame. -You can only transfer multiple pictures via a USB connection. If you want to load pictures from a camera's SD card, they need to be copied ONE at a TIME. I wanted to pre-load 350 or so pictures of grand kids for my mother-in-law. (What a neat present for Christmas!) -Because this frame is so new, there are no drivers available online. My computer didn't recognize the frame as a device, so on my first call to HP, I was told, "Sorry, you'll need to copy each picture individually." My second call was more helpful. We managed to get the frame recognized, where it cycled in and out of my computer every 5 seconds. I'm giving up. Mother-in-law is getting a Ceiva, brother-in-law probably a Pandigital, I know those work....

This review is from: HP df1010b3 10.4-Inch Digital Picture FrameOverall the picture frame and display quality are very good. I wanted a digital picture frame that could turn itself on and off during certain times and show my pictures in random order. That way I don't waste electricity with having it run all night and during the day when I'm at work. Basically I just want to set this up then just have it run on its own, turning itself on when we are at home and randomly showing pictures from our picture collection. Although I set the time on the unit and enabled the automatic on and off feature, the unit would stay on all the time. And then every time I would turn it off then on the next day, the pictures would show in the order they are stored in the internal memory. I found I had to go back into the settings each time and turn shuffle mode off, then back on again to get it to start showing the pictures in random order. I find it very frustrating to have to have to do a work-around for something that should work as advertised. HP tech support advised me that I had a defective unit and to exchange it. The replacement unit turns on and off like it should, however I have to keep going back in to the settings and turning the shuffle mode off then back on to get the setting to work. If they offered a firmware upgrade I could do (like most products do) I would rather that, but since that's not possible looks like I have to return this one also....

GWC Technology HU2044 USB 2.0 4-Port Hub (adapter-style housing)

This simple and stylish 4-port hub gets the job done with high-speed USB 2.0.

This review is from: GWC Technology HU2044 USB 2.0 4-Port Hub (adapter-style housing)I use mine with an original macbook air. The computer has only one USB port uses ethernet-over-USB, so it had no free ports most of the time. This is an elegant solution that allows me to leave the various USB devices I use in the office plugged into the hub, and just reconnect the plug when I bring in the laptop.Four stars rather than five because (1) I wish it were a little smaller and the cord were a little shorter, and (2) it will sync but not charge an iPad 2....

This review is from: GWC Technology HU2044 USB 2.0 4-Port Hub (adapter-style housing)I bought this because one of my hubs stopped working on my laptop. Even though it's kind of bulky, it is functional! I haven't had any issues with using this hub to connect directly to my computer either....

This review is from: GWC Technology HU2044 USB 2.0 4-Port Hub (adapter-style housing)I was looking for something small yet compact to add to an Apple USB wall charger (the kind that comes with iPad). Well after seeing quite a few splitters, I decided to try this little white one because it wasn't too big, nor too long of a cable. With a tiny bit of two sided sticky tape, I was able to mount this beside the USB wall plug, and now have 4 chargers instead of just one.If you are looking for a small, solid USB hub, then this is the one. It doesn't feel cheap like some, it actually has some weight too it which gives it a more solid feel, and it looks good too. If I ever needed another hub, I would definitely buy a second one....

This review is from: Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (Silver)We received the product in perfect condition, on time with everything included. I could not have asked for a better experience. Thanks amazon and sunset electronics for making my daughter's christmas extra special.

This review is from: Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (Silver)Excellent Camera. I have wanted a camera of this quality for a long time. The company is top notch and are very considerate. I recommend them to any and all photography fans.

This review is from: Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (Silver)I received the package and was disappointed to see that Sunset Electronics sent the wrong lenses... much cheaper lenses. I complained and they tried to convince me that the more expensive lens in the package would not work with the camera, which was a lie. I sent the lenses back to be replaced with what I ordered with the package. They sent the two lenses advertised, however they were sent without the original packaging or documentation... probably refurbished. The rest of the package is just a bunch of junk. The additional zoom lenses are cheap and do not work with the advertised lenses, the filters do not fit either of the two lenses, the tripod(s) are too flimsy for the D700, the memory card advertised does not work with the D700, the remote shutter was not shipped with the package, the batteries are cheap replacements instead of Nikons and will not last for much more than just over a hundred photos. With a 15% restocking fee it is not worth sending back, but hopefully purchasers in the market for a D700 will read my review before choosing Sunset Electronics or this rip off package. Buy the camera & lenses separate from someone else.

This review is from: Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (Silver)unlike some reviewers, i have actually seen and held this camera. while i only took 3 pictures, simply loading them and having a look is shocking. this camera and the underlying X3 chip blow away everything in digital photography today. getting all three colors (rather than one like all other digital cameras) in each pixel gives you images you can easily enlarge without loss and artifacts. this camera easily blows away cameras costing many times more.this isn't a true 3 MP camera. it is more like a 9 MP. but better.... there is no longer a reason to not go digital.getting 3 colors per pixel means no interpolation. that in turn means sharper, truer color, photos without artifacts. in short, digital photos without the digital look. some of the photos taken with this camera are as good as medium format film images.digital is not as good as film, it is now better.

This review is from: Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (Silver)I got mine last week, and it's image quality is the best of any digital camera. My only complaint is that for the price they skimped on the little things... Specifically one of the battery doors is poorly made (I broke it after inserting the batteries :-( )But after shooting pictures almost continuously over the holidays, I have to say that the Sony 717 doesn't compare.Lance

This review is from: Nikon 1 J1 10.1 MP HD Digital Camera System with 10-30mm VR and 30-110mm VR 1 NIKKOR Lenses (Silver)Given reasonable light, this DSLR bests all others in overall image quality with its 10.2M sensors and astounding sharpness. The best digital portrait camera in existence. Don't be fooled by the camera's 3.5MP rating--that is non-interpolated--all other digital camera manufactures, including all DSLRs, list only interpolated resolutions as their MP rating. This inflates other cameras' MP rating by a factor of 3 times relative to the SD-9, since they count each Red, Green, and Blue sensor as a sigle "pixel." The SD-9 counts a full set of three sensors, one Red, one Green, and one Blue, as a single "pixel." Foveon.com claims the SD-9's image quality bests film for any given capture area, and approaches medium format film quality for enlargements up to 40 inches. Some report that sharp enlargements up to 8 feet on the long side are possible from the SD-9's interpolated 14MP output files. The camera's software is the best available. The SD-9 always works losslessly, so be sure to compare only RAW mode specs when comparing to other DSLR's operat...
