This review is from: TomTom ONE Portable GPS Automobile Navigator (Refurbished)****A friend of mine bought this GPS receiver, and we set it up together. The TomTom ONE is remarkably user-friendly, extremely easy to set up, and intuitive to operate. The screen features a nice "driving view" that was unavailable in GPS systems at the time I bought my GPS; this view is more 3D, very easy to read and quite appealing. For the price, it seems to be an incredible value. The TomTom ONE kit comes with a USB cable that hooks up to your computer and a CD that can be used to manage it over the computer, giving greater flexibility in management. My old GPS can only be managed from the console in my car.Seeing the capabilities of this portable GPS system, I wished I would have not had a different GPS installed in my vehicle, but instead purchased this unit. The TomTom ONE can be transported and used in rental cars on trips, or in friends' cars, and there are no worries about it being stolen, as it is small enough to stow away in your purse. Versatile, easy to use, inexpensive---what more could you want in an entry-level GPS?****...

This review is from: TomTom ONE Portable GPS Automobile Navigator (Refurbished)EXCELLENT navigator.I bought this item after reading about it in Consumer Reports magazine. They rated it as a "Best Buy." Well, I found it refurbished at Amazon for $179.99, which included free shipping. So far, so good! It is "idiot proof" as far as programming. It gets me where I'm going with a built-in speaker which calls out audible directions as you drive. "At the end of the road, turn right" for example. It will also give you advanced warning of an exit, such as "Exit right in 2 miles." I purposely have driven in the wrong direction to check how well it calculates a new course. It hasn't disappointed me yet. Within seconds it gives you a new verbal command along with a corrected course on its screen. If you choose to ignore it's verbal directions (which I have)and go your own way, it will eventually see it your way and recalculate your route. I highly recommend this GPS....

This review is from: TomTom ONE Portable GPS Automobile Navigator (Refurbished)The Good* Many options to configure- - voices and accents- - day and night colors- - points of interest (POI) can be added manually or by downloading them- - avoid toll roads and constructions* On local roads, it tells you that there is a R/L turn ahead in 1 mile. On interstate highways, it notifies you in 2 miles.* It's very accurate in determining your current location.* Online updates and free POI are available.* The status bar can be configured to display the direction, compass, speed, time of arrival and distance left to travel.* It allows an itinerary and can assign addresses as waypoint (places to pass) or destination (places to stop).* A planned route can be animated from start to finish.* The screen is very readable. I had the sun from all directions and I had no trouble reading it. I had my brightness set to default (80% brightness)* The volume level is good. I don't have a quiet car, was traveling at 70mph and had the radio on (mid volume) and I could still hear the instructions well at 90% volume.* When making a turn, the map zooms in allowing you to get a better view of the road divisions.* A 4-digit pin can be assigned, preventing thieves from using it. (see problems below)The Bad* No AC charger, you'll have to use the USB cable and connect it to you PC or use the car charger cable.* No dashboard mount, only a windshield cup is included.* No external volume control, it has to be done via the screen. When adjusting the volume, the unit will repeat the last instruction so that you can determine if the level is OK. This can be confusing. For example, when I adjusted the volume it said "Right turn ahead". My next turn at that time was 170 miles away. I think it's better if it should say something like "Volume adjusted."* The only way to set a 4-digit pin/password is through the TomTom Home program that you must install. I encountered a problem with this process though it could be due to my defective unit.* If you have entered an invalid 4-digit pin, the unit does not notify you, it simply won't proceed to the screen and waits until you enter the right pin.* The list of Favorites is deep down in the Preferences menu. I think this should be more easily accessible.* I suspect that the number of points of interest (POI) is not a lot compared to other gps navigators. When driving on I80 from Iowa to Chicago I have not seen single rest area marked as such even though I have configured the settings to show those POIs. A lot of gas stations and huge name shopping centers are also missing.* No...
