This review is from: Alfa AP51 802.11b/g Wireless-G Router - Multi-Function AP / Client / Router / WISP / RepeaterThis router has a nice user interface with lots of features and DOES do client mode (wired to wireless to another router, for connecting non-wireless devices). The price is amazingly low.But that's where it ends. Despite the large antenna, this router struggles to connect to anything not in the same room. When I tried turning up the power (in the GUI), my laptop could no longer see any of my neighbor's AP's and had trouble connecting to my own router in the garage, even though it is on a different channel -- it was jamming everything nearby. I had a similar experience when I put it into repeater mode -- I couldn't connect to either one.The firmware has an issue too -- clients can't connect until it finishes connecting to the WAN. That includes clients trying to access the console. Which means if you configured the WAN wrong (or for client mode, the password was incorrect) you aren't going to be able to get into the console to fix it. Reset and start over.I thought about trying a firmware upgrade. But Alfa's site doesn't have this router listed. They have other 51 series -- iMesh 51, 51 "outdoor". I'm afraid I'll brick it.So if you need an AP in a hotel room this router is tiny for fitting into your luggage. That's all I'd recommend it for.UPDATE: the firmware defaults the transmission power (under Wireless 1) to 18dbm (out of 26 max). Lowering this to 6 or 8 gave me much better results (link quality 44 instead of 10) when connecting to another router downstairs. Maybe the device was jamming itself. I've upped my rating a star.Their "client" mode puts you on an isolated subnet. Much more like the client I am used to is bridge mode with WDS repeater enabled (but with second Wireless disabled; disable "Inherit AP settings") and DHCP disabled. If you configure LAN to be in the same IP address range you can access both routers without configuring your computer's subnet....
