This review is from: FaceVsion FV TouchCam E1The FV TouchCam E1 has better specs than the slightly-less-expensive FV TouchCam N1, but those intending to use the E1 on Skype may want to buy the N1 instead. Whereas the N1 is promoted as being Skype compatible, the E1 is not promoted as such, and in fact FaceVsion is trying to promote their own Skype-like service, QuLives, with the E1. Since QuLives has (in my opinion) no chance of becoming as popular as Skype, this is a bad strategy on the part of FaceVsion. The practical result is, regrettably, that FaceVsion did not work very hard to make the E1 work well with Skype. In fact, if you plug the E1 in to Skype at the time of this writing (Skype 5.3), the E1 delivers a 4:3 image instead of the widescreen image you'd be expecting. If you have some technical skills, you can get the E1 working with Skype by downgrading to Skype 4.2.0.169, and then editing both the config.xml and profile.xml files in your Skype folder: Add "<Video<Height720</Height<Width1280</Width</Video" within the "<lib" section of each of those files. After restarting Skype, the E1 will deliver the widescreen image that you expect. Naturally, the developers of Skype are always hard at work improving Skype, so perhaps by the time you are considering the purchase of the E1, Skype will have made the latest version of Skype compatible with the E1 without having to resort to these tweaks. So how does it look? With the tweaks it looks pretty good. I'd originally noticed that in very low light, such as at night, there is flickering -- but my observation was in error and I have altered this review to note what I learned: I'd tried adding <Fps24</Fps in an effort to force a particular frame-rate, and that caused the flickering. Perhaps a more powerful computer could accept a manually-forced frame-rate, but my laptop could not, and I have no other computer to test it on.One criticism about FaceVsion cameras in general is that there is no control panel for the camera whatsoever, only the default controls within Skype, which are very limited. Contrast that to brands which not only have independent control panels for their webcams, but independent control panels with both useful settings and "fun" settings, such as making you look like a talking cartoon. No such effort from FaceVsion here, and no signs that they will make an effort. In short, the E1 appears to be a camera intended for FaceVsion's also-ran service, QuLives, and as a camera for Skype it has serious drawbacks, namely that independent controls (controls other than the usual Skype video controls) are absent, and compatibility with Skype is low, to the point of requiring custom tweaks. Whether the E1 ends up as a good choice depends entirely on whether FaceVsion will work with Skype to improve compatibility (unlikely) or if FaceVsion will provide a control panel (unlikely), or whether Skype will improve compatibility with HD cameras on their own (more likely).
