This review is from: Garmin nvi 850 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)I bought this model after owning the 205 and 255 Garmin GPS units which I was very satisfied with. So I moved up to this one because of the wider screen and it came highly recommended from a family member. Quite honestly I was disappointed in the battery life and the voice recognition thing. The original battery I have already replaced and the new one, too, will not hold a charge over more than a couple of days even when unplugged and turned completely off in the console. I never had that problem with the other models. The voice recognition thing works sometimes but it hates my southern drawl and I hate screaming at it while I'm driving so I just use it manually. I've had this unit about 2 months and a couple of times it has just frozen up on me and I had to turn it off and remove the battery to reboot the system. Like the other smaller units it will get you to the right street every time, but don't count on the location flag being exact. Another disappointment was the multi-lane mode. When I saw it advertised the screen was in the multi-lane mode at an intersection, so I naturally thought the screen was always in that mode. In that mode you actually see the lanes and traffic signs, not just the triangle moving along a map. On my first trip I discovered that it rarely goes into the multi-lane mode and only when there is more than one lane exiting the same direction. What a bummer! Ending on a positive note, because of the larger screen I can read it easily....

This review is from: Garmin nvi 850 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)This was my FIRST of TWO Garmin REFURBISHED units in six days. The second was the Garmin 1490. Both were extremely fouled up. This left me wondering who does the rework on Garmin rejects(?) I was told Gamin did; so I Emailed Garmin---phone calls take for................never!!!!!!! They told me Garmin did the rework. The Email stated that they were sorry :( but stated I should have hooked it up to my computer online and performed a software update.....wrong answer!! They certainly made it clear that they would make good on their product.Problem was I was headed out on a 2600 mile trip. The 1490 unit quickly crashed, so what I ended up doing was stopping at a Best Buy and purchasing a new unit--I got the Garmin 1390t-----worked perfect the entire trip. I really wanted the 5 inch screen (1490) AND/OR Voice recognition (850), neither of which you can get on the same model.I stuck with Garmin because I am still convinced Garmin is the best GPS unit....once you get one that works---probably, in most cases means don't buy refurb (?)There are too many different models that only confuse you on what features are worth it.Voice recognition (850 model) is a must (if it works---never got a chance to check it out) and the 5 inch 1490 was very loud, bright and visually pleasing. Many features are absurd (pic viewer, games, etc.)and do not belong in moving vehicles....

This review is from: Garmin nvi 850 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished)We got this for my dad for christmas, and he was really excited for it but never really used it. I have used it a few times, and he uses it alot now. it is pretty simple to use. it has some features which are kind of useless. It has for example a voice command which requires you to memorize numerous commands, and therefore you probably won't use it. It is a good device don't get me wrong, but i would buy a cheaper one, and lose some of the unessential features....
