These are steel triangles blanketed in a bonding agent then covered in diamond particles. Diamond hard abrasives are recommended when you wish to remove stock, for restoration purposes and to aggressively re-shape, re-bevel and re-profile a cutting edge.
This review is from: Spyderco Diamond Triangle PairThe SharpMaker is a great product, but one of the drawbacks is that it's slow going if the bevels of the knife are wider than the 30 or 40 angle that the SharpMaker is set for. And reducing the angle with the stones that come with the SharpMaker can take far too much time and effort to be worth while. That's why people opt for the diamond stones. But I found that the SharpMaker diamond rods were not coarse enough for my taste, and reducing the angle with the diamond stones still took far too much time and effort to be worth while, at least with some of the tougher steels, such as D2 and ZDP-189.I think a better idea is to purchase the DMT D6CX Double Sided Dia-Sharp Coarse/Extra-Coarse Bench Stone:DMT D6CX Double Sided Dia-Sharp Bench Stone - Coarse / Extra-Coarse.You can lean the DMT stone against one of the SharpMaker ceramic rods so that the DMT stone is at a 30 or 40 angle and hold the DMT stone fast to the ceramic rod with one rubber band going around the top and another one going around the bottom of DMT stone/ceramic rod. The DMT stone will remove more metal faster than the SharpMaker diamond rods. And if you want to freehand sharpen, the DMT stone is much better for that.Having bought the SharpMaker diamond rods and then the DMT stone, I can say that the extra expense of the DMT is well worth it. Some people love the SharpMaker diamond rods. I'm not one of them....
This review is from: Spyderco Diamond Triangle PairThese diamond rods make sharpening old dull knives so much faster and easier. I use these stones to give the knife a 40 degree edge, and then work my way through the other stones to fine tune the edge. My next purchase is going to be the ultra fine stones....
This review is from: Spyderco Diamond Triangle PairI'm happy with the diamond rods. They remove metal much more quickly than the brown rods included in the Sharpmaker set; this saves a lot of time when establishing the initial bevel. Not for frequent use -- just for very dull knives or knives that haven't been sharpened with the Spyderco system before. I'd have given five stars, but for some reason it's a little hard to get them in one of the Spyderco slots. They must be slightly larger than the default rods....
