It starts off low and gradually increases as described. Works perfectly for my husband. The large snooze button, along with the large display are the main reasons I purchased this for my husband. I like that I can turn around anywhere in the room and see the time due to the large display. And the pitch of the buzz alarm is fine with me as well. Can't comment too much on the radio as he hasn't and likely won't use it for this. When I first set it up, I tuned in some stations and it was fine - not the best quality but fine for casual listening or to wake to the radio....

The Timex Jumbo Display Alarm Clock Radio is a decent clock for its price. It's especially useful if your clock's backdrop is a window that gets plenty of morning sun - the visibility is great.Although the shape discourages setting things on top of it, I love the aesthetic design with its rounded top and thick, silver frame - visually it's somewhat beautiful. The feature buttons are integrated nicely, making the clock easy to operate without referring back to the instructions. The underside battery compartment houses a 9-volt battery to keep settings when moving the clock from place to place or during power outages.The push button alarm on/off toggle with corresponding indicator dot on the face of the clock makes it easy to determine its set status. A sleep function for the radio can be activated for fifty-nine or fewer minutes before shutoff. The "wake to" (radio/alarm) switch, clock set button, alarm set button and snooze bar round out a full set of standard features.The uniquely illuminated snooze bar can be set to flash or not flash as the alarm is going off. It's just a shame that a third switch position to turn off its constantly-on, power-consuming, banana-colored illumination isn't included as well. It's a novelty of a feature. After all, it's in the same place that most anyone would expect a snooze bar to be.The tone of the one available alarm gradually increases in volume to ease abrupt awakenings, yet I think the top volume could be a little higher to catch a heavier sleeper's attention, as the tone seems a bit mellow.The radio speaker sounds weak, like the hollow plastic resonance from the housing, which gives the clock that new electronic gizmo smell I'm so fond of. Also, I would rather have a built in antenna than to have the wire antenna sticking out from the bottom rear right hand side, as it adds just that much more clutter to it.If you're looking for a bright jumbo display and you don't mind the thin wire antenna in back, then this clock is just fine. I don't dislike this clock at all, but there are a couple of changes I'd implement if I could, and that puts this clock on the upper side of a three-star product rating for me....
