Ricoh PX 16 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Black)

digital still camera

This review is from: Ricoh PX 16 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Black)Three-and-a-half stars. This is a unique camera in that it is a waterproof/dustproof/shock-resistant camera that doesn't look ruggedized or beefed-up. There is also the Sony TX5/TX10, but I preferred this Ricoh PX for the physical buttons and switches over the Sony's touchscreen. Another reason to get this is Ricoh's expertise in camera handling--I liked the flip switch to turn on the flash, and the one button access to 5 user-selectable scene modes. The marks against this model would be the senseless choice of a 16Mp sensor (detail at the expense of noise), and the inability to adjust flash power. Minor gripes would be the exposed lens (it's a toughened glass filter over the actual lens, but this doesn't reassure a scratch-phobic user), the omission of freeze-proofing, and the over-sharpened look of photos on vivid-setting (the only way saturation can be increased in-camera). Overall a respectable first attempt at a ruggedized consumer P&S by RICOH. Just too bad that consumers in general would now be better served if camera makers downgraded the pixel density of their P&S sensors.
