This review is from: Belkin Play N600 HD Wireless Dual Band N RouterOur router bit the dust and my son had taken to connecting to the neighbor's access point, while I chose to tether to my mobile phone. Meanwhile, it was only a matter of time before other family members found dissatisfaction in either of these contingencies. What is a skinflint like me to do?I wanted, well, everything...* 802.11 b/g/n* at least 4 gigabit Ethernet ports* dual-band* ability to connect an external drive as a simple NAS* a 2-yr warranty would be niceCostco had these on sale for $89.99. I couldn't say 'no'.Setup was a breeze. The Belkin Router Monitor app sits in the System Tray and makes configuration easy. Most configuration parameters have help files that can be called up by clicking on the parameter's title and help files are quite good.Performance is very good. Gigabit Ethernet ports are fast (as they should be). Wireless is predictable (so far) and reaches 150-ft (54Mb). Configuring remote devices is easy.Only thing is, when I connected my 1TB WD MyBook drive, the router would not recognize it. I finally called tech support and learned that the router ONLY supports SELF-POWERED portable USB drives or thumb drives. I tested this with a 320GB Seagate FreeAgent Go drive, which I had on hand, and the router detected it instantly and network access was very quick. I'm glad I didn't buy an externally powered drive....

This review is from: Belkin Play N600 HD Wireless Dual Band N RouterIt took me about 10 minutes to set this router up. The initial set up was okay, but I was disappointed with my Belkin wireless n adapter maxing out at 144Mbps. After doing some research on the internet I found a solution to the problem. Three quick changes and my speed jumped to 300mbps. The article said:Disable WPSChange the security to WPA / WPA2 (PSK)And to change bandwidth to 20/40 or 20+40 MHz.If you would like to read the article[...]...

This review is from: Belkin Play N600 HD Wireless Dual Band N RouterNeeded to replace a dying WRT54G as I noticed I was only maxing out at about 12mbps down while paying for 20mbps and my connection was constantly dying, especially after running torrents. Had dd-wrt installed, but nothing would help. After 3 years of heavy usage, it was just time. I had decided to go with Belkin here because I just recently finished helping a friend set up wireless and he had one of the newer Linksys routers that replaced the WRT54G/L/S line and I was not a fan. I figured the worst that could happen is it doesn't work and I return it.I'm very happy with this purchase (got it at BB instead of Amazon as I had a gift cert and coupon). The router came with no instruction manual (it exists on the disc however), but setup is clearly explained in a 1-2-3 manner -- if you're tech savvy enough, you should know how to install a router pretty quickly. I did run into a bit of problems during setup, but I'm quite sure it had to do with a combination of me having to reboot my cable modem and me resetting my computer's internet connection settings, which were set at a static IP (this router uses 192.168.2.1 instead of Linksys's 192.168.1.1, FYI). During setup, when you're going through the steps and run into a problem, the software gives up pretty quickly and tells you to call customer support. I imagine they get a lot of calls. I ignored the software and fixed the issues myself. The dual antennas are fantastic and I am getting a full 20mbps now. I've got a wireless printer about 30 feet away through 2 walls, a Wii and 2 laptops on the 2.4GHz and 2 other laptops on the 5GHz, one of them currently running 6 torrents with no hiccups on any of the other computers. This loses 1 star because the Belkin Router Monitor software is junk, but somewhat needed for some of the extra features. I plugged in my external 2.5" drive into one of the USB ports and the software recognizes the drive, but when you double-click to access the drive, nothing happens. I thought that maybe the drive was just underpowered, so I tried a thumb drive and got the same results. After messing around with the software, I checked to see if maybe Windows (7 in this case) would be able to see the drive. After going to Computer and clicking Network on the left nav, ROUTER displays with the drive showing underneath. I had full access to the drive from there. I thought that the Belkin software needed to be running in order for this to work as the router and drive disappear after you stop the program from running; however, you can still go to \\ROUTER\ to access your drive (I just use a shortcut now) so you don't need the software for that as well (but you still MAY need it to init...
