I told him how much I enjoyed reading his delightful book and felt as though I too went on a "'Round the World cruise!" He is the consummate gentleman and it shows in his book. His writing is descriptive, humorous, and even educational. Trust me, if you have a stressful job like me (stockbroker) it was such a joy to curl up in bed each night and "escape" to the high seas.All I can say is, "Richard, please take ANOTHER trip and write again...SOON!!!!"...
This review is from: By Degrees: Around the World by Tramp Freighter [Paperback]Really would like to rate this higher, but...I was excited to see this book as it was published relatively recently (2006) and dealt with the same basic cruise on the Rickmers Line that I will likely be taking. I have come away disappointed though. The writer has a very narrow view of what is interesting about travel and apparently did little other than eat popcorn, watch as the ship was loaded and unloaded and complain about the other passengers considering him odd for not getting out and about during the port calls. Basics of freighter travel are covered and a couple of colorful gems here and there but not so much as a guide to freighter travel nor a truly gripping travel story....
