This review is from: Garmin nvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition (Factory Refurbished)Good speech recognition. I was surprised at the accuracy of speech recognition. Just tell it where to go, and it hasn't made an error yet...! A handy feature when you're on the road. I bought it for that sole reason..and I'd buy it again...and it's the refurbished unit at that. The refurbed unit + 4 yr ext'd warranty is cheaper than new...! Very good accuracy.

This review is from: Garmin nvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition (Factory Refurbished)New information after several more weeks of using the device:There's been a lot of talk about new firmware being released Dec 2010 that is supposed to fix the crashes. There is no new firmware, it's still 4.70, released Dec 2009. I've been using that ever since I got the unit. The full manual says to use FM frequencies of 90.1 Mhz or lower. I had discovered this before reading it in the manual. The high part of the band is weak, the middle of the band is useless, but the low frequencies actually work OK, if you can find an unused channel at the very low end. It is nice to use the MP3 player, and have the music mute during navigation instructions. Also, it mutes during voice recognition of course, so you don't have to turn down the radio. You can crank up the radio loud enough to compensate for the low volume out of the unit.I've now had three lockups after three weeks of light use. None of these were during driving however, they seem to come during powerup. If my 265 locks up, it wouldn't be feasible to pull the battery to fix it. The good news is the 265 (and 275 before that) never locked up.I don't think there's anything wrong with the power switch, I think units get locked and people are frustrated they can't turn them on. Plus the battery can get discharged easily, mine was dead last night just a few hours after driving with the unit being charged.I still think Garmin should be ashamed for putting out a product like this. It's clear they're never going to totally fix the lockups. If you get one cheap, and can put up with the frustrations, maybe you'll be happy with it. Getting the Bluetooth with the 885 would be nice, but haven't seen any of those cheap enough to justify the problems.Original review:With a number of bad reviews, I thought I'd take a chance on a refurbed unit to see if Garmin really laid an egg on this one. I've used Garmin for many years, and had trouble believing that.Unit was nicely refurbed, everything packaged nicely and it's good cosmetically. Battery had a 2008 date on it, so likely not very strong.Voice recognition works most of the time, but you have to remember what commands are active on what screens.I didn't find the power switch to be a problem, you have to hold it on for a full second for it to turn on. Also, the manual says holding to the left for 8 seconds may fix a freeze. I suspect some people pulling their batteries aren't trying this first. Now for the bad. Speaker volume is just about adequate if radio/heater are turned off, and volume is set to high. The FM transmitter is a joke, I have it three feet from an old style whip antenna, and it's not strong enough to quiet the background hiss. It's true you can't turn this thing off without pulling the battery, it goes to a standby mode that drains it quickly. If you don't drive the car every day, it'll go dead, and that kills batteries quickly.Supposedly the latest software update fixes the freezing problem, haven't had the unit long enough to have an opinion on that. Don't know what Garmin was thinking on this unit, it was supposed to be one of their higher end products, and it fails to live up to their standards

This review is from: Garmin nvi 855 4.3-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator with Speech Recognition (Factory Refurbished)Garmin Nuvi 855 refurbished is a very nice unit for the price. I have now owned 4 Garmin models and one TomTom My wife threatened to run over the TomTom since many addresses were missing In our rural area of northern Wisconsin,(TomToms response was "You can find the address and upload them to us")GPS in reverse. I then bought her a Garmin and she was very happy. She is still using her old Garmin and loves it. The Nuvi is very quick to lock onto the Satellites. I have owned the unit for one month. It worked out of the box. I purchased lifetime maps and downloaded them to the device without issue. Compact but a very nic...
