This review is from: Panasonic BB-HCM580A 21x Optical Zoom Pan/Tilt Security Network Camera (Silver)FYI: This "INDOOR ONLY" BB-HCM580A includes a BB-HCA3 (not BB-HCA3A) adapter in the box, so don't be fooled by Amazon's "Frequently Bought Together" suggestion to purchase an AC adapter you don't need.RE: Night visionA true "night vision" camera has infrared LED illuminators that allow you to see in total darkness. The BB-HCM580/581 cameras do not have infrared LED illuminators, and are NOT true "night vision" cameras. Panasonic's "color night view" mode sets the shutter speed to 1/30 second to let more light in to the lens... a trick that doesn't work well when compared to infrared illuminators. This very slow shutter speed will always cause MOVING images captured in color night mode to be blurred. However, the color night view mode DOES present a decent image with only the very slightest amount of ambient light. Even though the image presented in color night view mode is grainy and seems to be constantly adjusting itself, it does get the job done. I walked outside one morning at 5:00 am when it was really dark, and walked toward the camera from 100' away to test the color night view mode. I saw the outline of a constantly blurred image coming toward the camera. I stood STILL at 10' away from the camera, and could not make out my facial features. A simple and obvious solution is that if you have a light that can illuminate the area you are monitoring.. turn it ON. I use an energy saving 100 watt bulb that claims to pull only 23 watts, and it lights up the area I'm monitoring with an image that is surely not up to infrared LED illuminator standards.. but improves the image a whole lot. However, this still doesn't fix the blurred MOVING images problem.RE: Daytime monitoringThis is where the BB-HCM580 camera shines. The latest firmware version 3.60R00 (5-27-2010) has a daytime mode that allows you to change the shutter speed ranging from 1/30 second to 1/1,000 second. At 1/1,000 second shutter speed I can easily capture a license plate 100 feet away on a car travelling 45 mph. The 21x "optical" zoom can clearly read the small expiration date on a license plate 75' away. The camera easily senses motion "through my window" caused by a person walking very slowly 100' away, with the camera set about 3/4 of maximum sensitivity. I'm hesitant to comment on the "maximum" capabilities of the BB-HCM580 camera in daytime mode because I haven't tested it at greater distances, but I will say that there was a lot of zoom left when I was reading license plates at 100'.
This review is from: Panasonic BB-HCM580A 21x Optical Zoom Pan/Tilt Security Network Camera (Silver)Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money. I have tried the most to least expensive Panasonic webcams. They are fine for day. The color night view is worthless in the whole line. You will not be able to identify anything that is moving. I purchased a Y-cam bullet and am very happy. Since it does black and white at night, the pictures are crystal clear.
